Where customers actually look
Locksmith customers are almost always looking at the moment they need you. The job mix is: a Google search, a directory like this one, or a recommendation from someone they trust. The balance varies by area, in a busy city most enquiries start with a search; in a small town word of mouth often outweighs everything else.
That urgency shapes your whole marketing. You are not advertising a product people browse at leisure, you are making sure you are findable, answerable and credible at the exact moment someone needs a locksmith.
Get the basics right: visibility
Before any clever marketing, fix the fundamentals:
- Complete directory listing, customers compare listings side by side, and a listing without prices gets skipped. Put your day rate and callout fee up front.
- Google Business Profile, verify it, keep the phone number and opening hours accurate, and add your real local address. This is how you show up on the map for "locksmith near me".
- Consistent phone and website, the same number everywhere, and a working website or landing page with your services and prices. A dead link loses the job.
- Tick every service you actually offer, customers search for "auto locksmith", "uPVC locksmith" and "emergency locksmith" as separate needs. If you do the work but have not ticked the service, you are invisible to those searches.
Turn calls into jobs
For locksmiths, the call is the sales funnel. The small habits that convert enquiries into jobs:
- Answer fast, especially at night. Emergency callers ring three or four numbers and go with whoever picks up. If you miss the call, you have lost the job.
- Quote the total up front, give a firm figure including callout and work before you set out. Customers on a no-call-centre directory expect it, and it filters out tyre-kickers.
- Give a real ETA, and arrive when you said. A locksmith who is late at 2am is not getting the next job.
- Arrive with ID, and a uniform, branded van or a business card. Emergency customers are wary of scams; presenting yourself properly is the fastest way to put them at ease.
Raise your average job value
Lockouts are your loss-leader: quick, competitive, and often the only work some customers ever need. The money is in the follow-on work. Security upgrades pay better than callouts and are jobs people are happy to pay for:
- uPVC repairs, hinges, handles, stuck doors. Cheap parts, fair labour, and it builds trust for bigger work.
- Euro cylinder and TS007 upgrades, anti-snap cylinders are the single most effective upgrade for most UK homes, and a natural upsell after any lockout or break-in job.
- Smart locks, customers researching them online are ready to buy; if you install them, they will not need to call the electrician too.
Every emergency callout is a chance to leave the customer safer, and more secure, than you found them. Offer the upgrade, explain the cost, and let them decide. The ones who say yes raise your average job value for the whole week.
Build a reputation that gets you recommended
Word of mouth is the cheapest marketing you will ever get, and it compounds:
- Ask for reviews, a simple follow-up text after a good job, with a link to your Google profile, works far better than a request at the doorstep.
- Always give a receipt, it signals a proper business, and it is what customers tell friends about when they say "the locksmith was professional".
- Follow up, a message the next day asking if the lock is behaving costs two minutes and turns a one-off caller into a repeat customer and a recommender.
